Innocence Lost

There I was, driving to pick up Haley with Brandon in the passenger seat,
when it started. ” Mom, I lost my tooth yesterday at Dad’s and the Tooth
Fairy gave me 2 bucks. Is the Tooth Fairy real or do you and Dad put the money
under my pillow?” My heart sunk a little and I replied honestly,
“Yes, we put the money under your pillow”. Brandon thought for awhile
and continued to ask about Santa and the Easter Bunny. He said he was last in
his class to find out, but I thought he would last longer. He stated that he knew
I would answer him since I always tell the truth. Damn, the charade is up. I
feel as though a piece of innocence is gone and somehow he is transformed into
an older boy. Well, at least I don’t have to sneak around anymore.

After the kids spent a few days at their Dad’s house, the kids informed me
that their dad was “pissed” and that I had “jipped him again” as if I ruined telling Brandon for him. Was he somehow looking foward to telling him? Does he want to crush his feelings? I asked the kids if they had explained how all the questions came about and they replied,” It is better if he is pissed at you than us.” Brandon further explained that
he was afraid that he would no longer be allowed to play with his friend
Bradley if their Dad found out that he was the one who spoiled it all.

I am both sad and relieved that Brandon knows the truth. Brandon wishes to
continue with the holidays exactly how they were and pretend as if he never
found out. I told him “no”. He had just one request.” Please buy me white chocolate. I never liked all the other stuff.”

My daughter is inquisitive and relentless, and I just know this situation is right around the corner for us. It will take some of the fun away, I’m afraid, but it is inevitable.
When I was almost four, I was becoming very suspicious that my father was Santa Claus. I was asking too many questions. I knew something was up. But then on Christmas morning, I woke up to find that Santa had left his hat on the sofa in our living room. I was totally floored that out of all the children in the world, Santa had left his hat at MY house. My dad bought himself a few more years of myth with that little trick.
Nice story. Thanks for sharing it.
